Joint Beam Training and Positioning for Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces Assisted Millimeter Wave Communications

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) offers a cost-effective solution to link blockage problem in mmWave communications, and the prerequisite of which is accurate estimation (1) optimal beams for base station/access point (BS/AP) mobile terminal (MT), (2) reflection patterns IRSs, (3) blockage. In this paper, we carry out beam training designs IRSs assisted communications estimate aforementioned parameters. To acquire patterns, firstly perform random beamforming maximum likelihood angle arrival (AoA) departure (AoD) line sight (LoS) path between BS/AP (or IRSs) MT. Then, with estimated AoDs, propose an iterative positioning algorithm that achieves centimeter-level accuracy. The obtained location information not only fringe benefit but also enables us cross verify enhance AoA AoD, it facilitates indicator. Numerical results show superiority our proposed scheme performance gain brought by information.
